Google sees privately registered data?

You own a bunch of sites and—for one reason or another—you don’t want Google to know that they all belong to you. So, you chose to register your domain names using the privacy protection option. But now, “gurus” are telling you that Google can see you own those sites anyways and that private domain name registrations won’t protect you. Is it really so?

Let’s make that crystal clear:

  1. Google can see all WHOIS data for all registrars. Just like everybody else (including you) can. But…
  2. If you register your domain name using private domain name registration, the data that goes into the WHOIS database is that of the company that sold you the private registration, not yours.

So…

  • Private domain name registration = Google can’t see your name/address.
  • Non-private domain name registration = Google can see your name/address.
