Can submitting too many articles to too many article directories hurt you in the search engines?
If done correctly, there is nothing like over-submitting to article directories. The main reason is… most article directories are crap and count for nothing from SEO point of view.
Also, the main point of submitting to article directories is to get your articles picked up by legitimate quality sites. This by definition rules out too many submissions (how many truly valuable articles can you come up with in a day?).
Finally, if submitting to article directories could hurt you, your competitors would be submitting articles on your behalf.
The only exception when you might be careful not to overdo things is when you have a completely new site. In such a case—in order to avoid the Google Sandbox—the rules of thumb for submitting to article directories are:
- Vary backlink URLs and anchor text.
- Have most of the links point to your internal pages (as opposed to your home page).
- Don’t rely on article submissions as your only link building tactic.
