How do you take advantage of different-language translations of your web pages from search engine optimization point of view?
Take a look at any Wikipedia page. On the left side, in the sidebar, you will see a list of languages. When you click on any of those links, you are taken to the same page, only in different language.
This is how you should set up your own translated versions—each page links to all its corresponding translations.
But, Wikipedia is making one big mistake you should avoid (from SEO point of view, at least). Instead of simply listing the languages as Wikipedia does, you should instead list the translations of the page’s title (or, the main keyword). So, if you have a page about “water”, the anchor text shouldn’t say:
English
Deutsch
Français
Español
but instead:
water
wasser
l'eau
agua
This way, you will be able to take advantage of one more good link with the right anchor text for each new translation of the page, regardless of which language the page is in.
Additionally, by strategically using the rel="nofollow" on those links, you will be able to send just the right amount of PR/LR to exactly those pages that need it most.
