Where I can find an updated list of free directories worth submitting to?
There are plenty of lists floating around, but most of them are too big and too old. The best list I know comes from Jerry West, and is currently available to members of StomperNet.
Is there a limit on how many directories can I submit to per day?
Yes. You need to optimize the pace of your directory submissions based on your site’s age and your current link profile. The younger your site and the less deeplinks and total links you’ve got, the less aggressive you want to be with new directory submissions.
While there isn’t any magic number to stick to, my recommendation would be to submit to a maximum of 5-15 directories per day. At the same time, as the number of directories worth submitting to will likely be rather small, you may not need to worry about this at all.
For older sites with tons of links, go as wild as you want. Also, most directories have large backlogs. So, their own (in)efficiency in processing new submissions will space you out.
What’s a good directory submission software to use?
Personally, I cannot recommend any as I hire people to submit by hand. But, I have heard good things about Directory Submitter.
Which paid directories are worth the money?
Yahoo! Directory is probably the best link you can get. Others to consider include: Best of the Web, Go Guides, Site Sift, Aviva Directory and iWeb Tool.
Is there any limit on how old a site could be for directory submissions?
No. It’s never too late for directory submissions.
What other directory submission tips do you have?
- Focus on quality over quantity.
- Always make sure to evaluate each directory to ensure you would be getting the benefits you are after (PR, link reputation, traffic, etc.).
- Vary titles (anchor text) and descriptions for each submission.
