How do you move a site to a new web host without affecting your search engine rankings?
If done right, changing hosts is a non-issue from search engine optimization point of view. Here’s the process:
- Keep your old hosting account running.
- Get a new hosting account.
- Re-create your site on the new account exactly as it was (URLs, folder structure, etc.).
- Point the domain’s DNS to the new host.
- Wait till the DNS change propagates, then check that all works properly.
- Now you can delete files from the old hosting account and/or close it.
The most important thing is to:
- Re-create your site EXACTLY as it was; and
- Not change your DNS before you have fully re-created the site.
