You are ready to build a new site and got a bunch of old domain names to choose from, some of which were registered as early as 1996. Should you use one of those oldies hoping it would help you in the search engines, even if the name itself isn’t that great? How much is the age of a domain name important from search engine optimization point of view?
The date when your domain name was registered doesn’t matter. What matters is how old is the content that is on the domain. If the 1996 domain has content on it from day one, that’s the most valuable domain from SEO point of view. However, branding might be another matter altogether and if I were you, I would be choosing my domain names based on brandability, not age. Any domain name can be brought to the top of SERPs, if you know what you are doing.
